Swedish World No.53 Mikael Ymer was disqualified from the Lyon Open against Frenchman Arthur Fils in the second round. The incident leading up to this happened due to the chair umpire Rogerio Santos’ call which Ymer was not happy about. He argued with the Umpire to come down and check the marks of the ball but the latter refused to do so. When the controversial game ended, Ymer lost his cool and hit the Umpire’s chair.
The arguments over the call were long and intense but eventually Umpire did not grant Ymer’s request. The controversies happened during the 11th game of the first set. Fils was awarded the match following Ymer’s actions. Fils was leading 6-5 at that point in time. The chair umpire denying Ymer’s request already pissed him and got broken due to a lapse in concentration, he viciously attacked the umpire’s chair resulting in his disqualification.
The tennis world is split over the controversy. While some argued that Ymer had no respect for the umpire, others were of the view that the umpire should’ve had the minimum courtesy to come down from his chair and check the mark of the ball.
According to the rules, the umpire may be right about his stand. Ymer waited to see where his shot landed and after that, he demanded the umpire check the ball. This isn’t in the rules and the umpire rightly denied the request.
Mikael Ymer was looking to enter Top-50 for the first time
The 24-year-old Swedish Mikael Ymer was finally trying to break into the top 50 this year. Currently ranked at his highest rank of 53, the loss in cool against Fils in the second round of the Lyon Open might see him get suspended in the worst case.
Though there were scenarios before like that of Alexander Zverev, the assault against the match official is not considered so normally by the ATP. But in this case, since there were some issues from the Umpire’s side as well, the tennis world is foreseeing that Ymer will still be available to play in the French Open starting next week.
Ymer has a win-loss record of 20-13 this season with 3 out of 5 wins on clay including the match against Fils yesterday. He has won no titles this year but he was expecting a breakthrough season this time around. before this year, his highest rank was 73 in 2019, the year in which he won 4 ATP titles. Following that, the Swedish has been trophyless.
