Ski superstar Mikaela Shiffrin has compared the Polish World No.1 Iga Swiatek to the likes of Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. Swiatek had earlier praised Shriffin for her mentality and how it motivated her. Due to the huge success in their respective sports, they often have been compared against each other a lot of times by the media. The two icons of the sports have huge respect for each other.

The 27-year-old Skier quoted about Swiatek, “First of all I love how she plays tennis, I think her style is so beautiful. It’s methodical and beautiful at the same time and reminds me of, I don’t know, Nadal or Federer or something like that.

She also has such an incredible mentality about tennis, about competitions. Being young and having so much success already in her career, she’s staying focused on, in my opinion, the right things and that’s really cool to see and actually something I can learn from.”

Continuing her train of thought, Shriffin echoed the open mentality of the Polish, “For so many athletes now, especially athletes at the top, it’s finally this conversation. sometimes, when you feel pressure, sometimes it’s good to be in that position, but sometimes it just feels heavy and you have to deal with both sides of it. But it’s better to know that there are other people who feel the same way.

So when we share those stories, for other athletes it’s helpful, but also for people in general, I think everybody deals with that on a daily basis, so it’s more normal than we thought 10 years ago.” (source: Eurosport)

The fourth-round encounter in the Australian Open 2023 between these two Grand Slam champions was much anticipated. Iga Swiatek has faced Elena Rybakina only once when the Polish was able to seal the deal in straight sets. That encounter was in the quarter-finals of the 2021 Ostrava Open. The Polish looks in great form as expected in this tournament and she is yet to lose a set in 3 of the matches played.

In the third round of the Australian Open 2023, The Polish World No.1 destroyed the Spanish qualifier Cristina Bucsa 6-0, 6-1. Bucsa was almost on the verge of getting double bagelled by the Polish as she was 5-0 down in the second set as well. The Spanish qualifier somehow managed to hold her serve in the 6th game to avoid total embarrassment.

Rybakina lost her first set of the tournament in the previous round. Yet she was able to play the crucial points well and win against last year’s runner-up Danielle Collins 6-2, 5-7, 6-2. The defending Wimbledon champion has got the right test by Collins in the third round to prepare for the battle against Iga Swiatek in the fourth round. The tennis world is looking forward to this clash of champions as the tournament is moving to the final stages.
