Monica Seles puts Carlos Alcaraz ON PAR with Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic lauding his generational talent
Monica Seles, who herself has won 9 Grand Slam titles, seems to be quietly taken by the young Spaniard's game
Former world no. 1 Monica Seles recently remarked on how mesmerized she is with Carlos Alcaraz’s fortitude on the court. In an interview to Eurosport, Seles shared that Carlos Alcaraz’s endurance might be his greatest asset on the court. She compared his perseverance to that of Rafael Nadal’s and Novak Djokovic, saying, “I am surprised by Alcaraz’s mental strength being so young, I only saw it in Nadal and Djokovic”
Monica Seles, who herself has won 9 Grand Slam titles, seems to be quietly taken by the young Spaniard’s game. She feels Carlos Alcaraz has the talent to play well on all surfaces and his future looks quite bright. “We are going to see Carlos win many more Majors because he is capable of being competitive on any type of surface and enduring matches as long as the ones he beat in the last US Open,” she added. Carlos Alcaraz had beaten Jannik Sinner in the US Open 2022 in a highly intense 5-setter clash 6-3, 6-7, 6-7, 7-5, 6-3.
Carlos Alcaraz is gearing up for the next clay tournament, the Barcelona Open. He missed the ongoing Monte-Carlo Masters due to injuries sustained in the Sunshine doubles tournament. Alcaraz has a lot of expectations riding on him from this clay season, and not just from his fans but legends like Monica Seles herself.

Monica Seles’ career was stunted at the same age as that of Carlos Alcaraz
Monica Seles praises the young Alcaraz’s tenacity at this young age, but the truth is that she herself was the tennis prodigy at the same age. Fans are all aware of the horrific knife-stabbing incident that left Seles in isolation from tournaments for 27 months.
A Steffi Graf fanatic attacked her on the court in Hamburg, Germany, on April 30th, 1993. At the time of the incident, Monica Seles was 19 herself. She had already won 3 Australian Open titles, 3 French Open titles, and 2 US Open titles. Upon her return, Seles struggles a lot with trauma, weight issues, and injuries. Though she did manage to win one Australian Open upon return, she remains Tennis’s biggest WHAT IF’S.
Today Seles is showering compliments on 19-year-old Carlos Alcaraz. But in reality, back in the early 1990s, she was at the receiving end of such compliments. Martina Navratilova once said she is one of the best players she played against in her 20-year career.
There is a lot riding on 19- and 20-year-olds like Carlos Alcaraz, Holger Rune, Emma Raducanu or Leila Fernandes to take Tennis to greater heights. Hope tennis greats never have to go through the trauma of Monica Seles. And leave fans wondering “What if?”.
