After a controversial match in the third round against World No. 5 Stefanos Tsitsipas, World No. 40 Nick Kyrgios has made his way to his second quarter-final at the All-England Club as he played out a thrilling 4th-round match at the 2022 Wimbledon Championships. Up against Brandon Nakashima, Kyrgios won the 5-setter 4-6, 6-4, 7-6(2), 3-6, 6-2 in his Center Court debut for the year as he continues to increase his odds of claiming the major.

Nick last reached a Wimbledon quarter-final in his debut in 2014 and since then was unable to make it again. He however has been in great touch coming into this year’s edition as he had a good preparation as well reaching the semi-finals of two Tour events as well but was unable to bag a title, a drought that continues from 2019.

Kyrgios and Stefanos were involved in a very heated clash when they met in the third round. Despite Stef winning the first set, Nick managed to win the match much to the frustration of the Greek. As a result, Tsitsipas fired a ball into the stands narrowly missing a spectator and later admitted to hitting body shots toward Kyrgios as he felt the Australian was ‘manipulating and bullying‘ him.

Nick had instead asked Stef to be defaulted from the match for hitting the ball carelessly citing the example of Novak Djokovic being defaulted during the 2020 US Open. While Kyrgios’ demand was not met, he was instead fined for his behaviour during the argument when he questioned the umpire’s credibility. Stef was just fined for the incident and no further action was taken against him, something that did not go well with Giorgos Kyrgios, father of Nick.

“My son would have been disqualified for it. He is then asked if he sees a certain double standard in tennis. Naturally. You have to have the same line with everyone,” said Giorgos in the BBC Tennis Podcast. Nick has been at the end of receiving heavy fines and punishments and given that Tsitsipas deliberately hit the ball towards the stands, many tennis fans believed that he should have been defaulted.
