Naomi Osaka announces disappointing news ‘in advance of Roland Garros

Naomi Osaka

World No. 38 Naomi Osaka has been having a difficult past couple of seasons. Having won the 2021 Australian Open, a massive season was expected from the Japanese superstar but things went south for her at the 2021 French Open. Naomi had confessed to having mental health issues prior to the start of the second major of the season and since then has been highly inactive on the Tour.

Having played just 16 matches so far this season with her best result coming in the 2022 Miami Open where she finished as the runner-up, Naomi has not been having a great season. The 4-time Grand Slam champion has suffered another setback as she announced her withdrawal from the 2022 Italian Open where she was scheduled to play her round 1 match on Tuesday, 10th May 2022.

“Unfortunately I’m going to have to withdraw from Rome as the injury which I picked up last week in Madrid hasn’t healed yet. It’s an Achilles injury so I need to be careful especially in advance of Roland Garros. I love this city and always enjoy playing in front of the Italian fans so I will be sorry to miss them – but look forward to coming back next year,” said Naomi announcing her withdrawal.

Naomi is likely to play on Clay directly at the 2022 French Open unless she changes her plans at the last moment and participates in either of the two WTA-250 events that will be played a week prior to the Grand Slam. If not, Naomi will reach the Roland Garros with only 2 clay-court matches under her belt that she played at the 2022 Madrid Open.

So far at the French Open, Naomi has played 11 matches and has a 7-4 record. Since her debut at the tournament in 2016 when she reached the third round, she has not been able to reach the 4th round.
