In the United Kingdom, WTA matches are streamed on Amazon Prime Video, which is one of the streaming giants of the world. But it is likely to lose its broadcasting rights after the conclusion of the year 2023. It has already lost its streaming rights for the Grand Slam tournament in the North American swing to Sky channel. Now, as per some reports, Netflix could likely be one of the potential bidders to acquire the streaming rights in the UK.
Netflix has already streamed non-live sporting content such as the Formula One documentary series ‘Drive to Survive’, which introduced people to the sport of F1 racing. The show ‘The Last Dance’ revolves around the journey of NBA legend Michael Jordan. Earlier, the streaming platform dismissed the idea of purchasing sports rights as they had believed it would prove to be expensive. But now, it has developed an interest owing to its popularity.
Streaming rights have been a major concern for people in the UK. But as per the latest reports, it is speculated that the American streaming company could be one of the potential bidders to have shown interest in acquiring rights after 2023. This news broke out after the ATP declined their request to broadcast men’s matches on one of the most famous entertainment platforms.
Netflix is also planning to launch a new tennis documentary next year along the same lines as the F1 documentary. It will showcase the lifestyles of tennis players with the likes of Nick Kyrgios, Taylor Fritz, Maria Sakkari, and Aryna Sabalenka, putting themselves forward to be followed by the cameras.
