Italy’s Jannik Sinner has advanced to his maiden Grand Slam semi-final at the ongoing Wimbledon Championships by overcoming Roman Safiullin in the quarter-final, with a scoreline of 6-4, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 in two hours and 14 minutes. He became the youngest player since 2007 to reach the Wimbledon semifinal. However, his road to the last four has triggered a debate on social media.

En route to the semi-final, Sinner defeated the likes of World No. 111 Juan Manuel Cerundolo, World No. 98 Diego Schwartzman, World No. 79 Quentin Halys, World No. 85 Daniel Elahi Galan, and Safiullin who is World No. 92. One can see Sinner hasn’t faced a single player ranked in top 10 or a single seeded player.

But now he will face the real challenge as his semi-final match is against second seed Novak Djokovic on Thursday (July 18) on Centre Court. The Serb is a four-time defending champion at the All England Club.

Fans said Jannik Sinner getting easy draws fits only at an ATP 250 event. Some fans claimed that Britain’s Emma Raducanu had faced tougher draws en route to her maiden Grand Slam title at the 2021 US Open.

But other fans pointed out that it’s not Sinner’s fault that the seeded players, the likes of Casper Ruud, Denis Shapovalov, and Taylor Fritz lost their matches. Some believe the top-ranked is not capable to play strongly on a grass court which is why Sinner did not get a chance to play against a seeded player.

Talking about Sinner’s semifinal match against Novak Djokovic, it’s worth mentioning that the two faced each other last year in the quarter-final at SW19. The Serb lost two sets 5-7, 2-6 but despite that, he pulled off a sensational victory by winning the next three sets 6-3, 6-2, 6-2. The duo faced each other twice with the Serb winning each clash. Their last match was at the 2022 Wimbledon quarter-final.

The 23-time Grand Slam champion saved himself a berth in the semi-final of this year’s grass-court major tournament by getting past Russia’s Andrey Rublev 4-6, 6-1, 6-4, 6-3. He is 27-4 on the season with three titles (two Grand Slam trophies and a win at the Adelaide International).

Sinner has a 32-10 win/loss record this year with one title. He won an ATP 250 event in Montpellier, France.
