19-year-old Carlos Alcaraz has been the talk of the town for the last few months. The teenager has stunned everyone with his incredible rise in such a short time and is projected as the new big thing in men’s tennis. He has already won 4 big titles in the season – two ATP 500s at Rio and Barcelona and two Masters at Miami and Madrid.

In his title triumph at Madrid, he defeated 3 top 4 players consecutively- Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, and Alexander Zverev, a feat not achieved in the last decade. Ahead of the Rome Masters, Alacraz’s idol, Nadal, spoke about his incredible rise.

He said that new things are always much more interesting than older things and mentioned that whenever you see a new car, it’s always better than an old one. “First, I think he is young, he is new and all the new things are much more interesting than older things. Without a doubt, when you see a new car, always looks better,” he said.

Nadal then revealed how difficult it is for him to manage things at this age with all the injuries and pain. He emphasized on the fact that with so many issues, it can be difficult to continue being competitive.

“Of course, at my age, when you start having more problems than what you can manage, of course, it is tough. Body issues, pains, you can manage that. The problem is when you start to feel that with all the things that are going through your body, you can’t be competitive enough to fight for the things that really keep exciting you,” he said.

Nadal concluded by saying that he isn’t playing for things outside his happiness. He said: “I like what I do, honestly. I am not playing anymore for things outside of my happiness and for things outside of my personal motivation.”

On the court, Nadal will face either John Isner or Francisco Cerundolo in the second round of the Rome Masters on Wednesday.
