Nick Kyrgios posts photo to show extent of his injury, girlfriend Costeen Hatzi says “Devastated”
Nick Kyrgios promises to come back stronger, with support from his girlfriend, after retriring from Australian Open 2023 due to an injury.
After fan favorite Nick Kyrgios‘ sudden exit from the Australian Open 2023 due to a devastating injury and outraged reactions from fans, the No. 1 Australian player expressed his regret, followed by a heartfelt message from his girlfriend, Costeen Hatzi. Kyrgios pulled out of the tournament because of a long-term knee injury, due to which his 2022 season was also canceled.
The player also disappointed the home crowd after his unexpected withdrawal. Kyrgios retired from the United Cup in Adelaide earlier this year too. Such a decision was taken by him due to his worsening condition and the consequent medical tests, as well as physiotherapy. Costeen Hatzi, World No. 19’s girlfriend, supported his decision and posted about it on her social media handle.
Kyrgios also updated on the progress regarding his knee procedure and the operation he went through. He even expressed his regret and disappointment, as reflected by fans, during a press conference.
Suffice to say, Kyrgios is out of the tournament, paving the way for lucky loser Denis Kudla, who will play against Kyrgios’ former first-round opponent, Roman Safiullin. The retirement also increases the chances for other players to qualify for higher rounds, as per the draw.

Australian Open 2023 is off to an injury-filled start
Along with Nick Kyrgios, on the WTA side of the tournament, Paula Badosa seeded no. 17, and Ajila Tomjlanovic both withdrew from the tournament due to their own injuries. This onslaught of injured players has majorly disappointed fans, especially the home crowd, with regard to their own favorites. Badosa is missing the tournament due to an injury suffered in the Adelaide International 2 quarterfinal.
Tomjlanovic, the No. 1 Australian player, is also withdrawing because of a knee injury. She also expressed her disappointment on social media after declaring her decision not to participate in the Grand Slam. Similarly, Novak Djokovic, who is most expected to win the title by fans and experts alike, canceled a practice session owing to an injury scare.
Ultimately, the Australian Open 2023 has seen some controversies on the first day itself, with Nick Kyrgios and his girlfriend breaking laws and surprising wins and losses from the likes of Chinese prodigy Juncheng Shang as well as Stan Wawrinka‘s defeat in the first round itself.
