Charismatic Australian No. 1 Nick Kyrgios said that he believes he is the only one who can stop Novak Djokovic at Wimbledon. The Australian tennis star was speaking ahead of the upcoming Halle Open, where he is scheduled to face Italian Lorenzo Sonego on Monday.
Kyrgios said that he was impressed by Djokovic’s achievement of winning 23 Grand Slam titles and that he hoped the Serbian would go on to add even more to that tally. Sporting the cap of his favorite Boston Celtics, Nick Kyrgios joked that he hopes Novak Djokovic wins at least 30 Grand Slam titles so that his own loss to the Serbian at Wimbledon last year will not look so bad.
Kyrgios, who is known for his outspoken and sometimes controversial personality, made the comment in an interview with Paul Häuser of Sky Sports Germany. He was asked about Djokovic’s recent achievement of winning his 23rd Grand Slam title, and he said that he was impressed by the Serbian’s success.
“I hope he gets to 30 and makes me look better because I lost to him at Wimbledon,” Kyrgios said. “But yeah, he’s an amazing achievement. You know, I know how hard he works and how much it means to him.”
Nick Kyrgios hopes Novak Djokovic will win 30 Grand Slam titles
As expected, Kyrgios’s comment was met with mixed reactions on social media. Some people found it to be humorous, while others thought it was brash. However, it is clear that Kyrgios is a fan of Djokovic and he respects his achievements. Nick Kyrgios expressed his belief that Novak Djokovic would be even more motivated to win more Grand Slams after missing out on some tournaments due to his vaccination status.
Kyrgios said, “Obviously missing out on some Grand Slams as well, not being able to get into the country sometimes, and obviously that time in Australia, so I know that he’d probably be on like 25, 26 at the moment. So I know he’s hungry and people think he’ll slow down. I think it will only make him more motivated to get more, so I hope he gets to 28, 30.”
With a glint in his eye, the World No. 25 nonchalantly proclaimed, “If it’s not me, no one,” when asked who could stop Novak Djokovic at Wimbledon.
Kyrgios is no stranger to big matches against Djokovic. The two have met three times over the years, with Kyrgios holding a 2-1 lead. However, Djokovic won their latest clash at the Wimbledon Final last year, coming back from a set down. The 2023 Wimbledon Championships will be held from July 3 to July 16. Djokovic is the defending champion, but Kyrgios will be looking to upset the Serb and win his first Grand Slam title.
