Australian tennis player Nick Kyrgios recently appeared in Mike Tyson’s ‘Hotboxin’ with Mike Tyson podcast and talked about some pretty interesting topics. During one of the segments, Nick was asked about the fact that he was constantly compared to former NBA player Dennis Rodman for his aggressive nature on and off the court, which led to several controversies.
“Cool. I reckon it’s cool, yeah. I feel like my athletes that I like, Allen Iverson, Dennis Rodman, guys like that who did it their way. I feel like you look at some other tennis players like Roger Federer, Djokovic, Nadal, they’ve all had… They were super professional. They’ve done it the really professional way,” the Australian said.
Then he added, “But the way I did it was just I just had fun with it. And I didn’t really listen to anyone. And I’ve beaten all these guys. So I feel like I’ve had some wild moments as well, and I’ve had some huge fines.” (H/T: Hotboxin’ with Mike Tyson podcast)
Nick Kyrgios said that throughout his career, he has paid about $500,000 in fines, but he is comfortable with it because it goes to charity. He agreed with the comparisons to Dennis Rodman, saying that just like him, Rodman did not care too much. The two athletes had the same flamboyant personalities and ways of living.
The Australian is 28 years old now and currently inactive. He does not participate in tournaments much and many are of the opinion that he might end up retiring from tennis soon.
Nick Kyrgios reveals he used to play basketball as a kid
Kyrgios was asked in the podcast about how he decided to become a tennis player. The player revealed that during his childhood; he liked playing basketball as well. However, it was his dad who decided that he should put all eggs in one basket, and thus he decided to pursue tennis as a career.
“Didn’t want to at all. I played basketball when I was young. And then at 14, my dad just… I was shooting hoops, I don’t remember it. He just came outside and he’s like, Look, we’re going to stop playing basketball and we’re just going to put all our eggs in the basket of tennis. And that’s it. Broke my heart,” Nick Kyrgios said.
