Nick Kyrgios leads the Australian contingent into the 2023 Australian Open. Seeded 19th, the World No. 21 Aussie enters the Grand Slam event as one of the title favorites. Apart from being a contender in singles, he is the defending champion in the Men’s Doubles alongside Thanasi Kokkinakis.
Following his doubles title in Melbourne Park last year, Kyrgios reignited his interest in the sport. He went on to reach the finals of the 2022 Wimbledon only to lose to three-time defending champion Novak Djokovic. He ended his singles trophy drought in the Washington Open winning both singles and doubles titles there.
Kyrgios entered the 2022 US Open with eyes on silverware but lost in the quarter-finals. He had talked of retiring had he won a Major title but New York wasn’t the place. He however brought the topic ahead of the Australian Open.
“100 percent! It is a lot of training and a lot of work. I just want to be able to eat whatever I want and drink what I want to drink, and just relax. It is a hard lifestyle. The dedication that these guys show day in and day out. I did a bit of that last year and had a great year to show that I am still one of the best. I am going to try and do it this year, and hopefully I can do it, but it will be hard,” said Kyrgios speaking after his practice match against Djokovic.

Nick Kyrgios says Novak Djokovic is ‘Important’
Nick Kyrgios and Novak Djokovic played out their much-anticipated practice match on Friday. The match sold out within an hour with the money raised through ticket sales going toward charity. In a fun-filled match at the Rod Laver Arena, the duo put their ‘Bromance’ on display. After the match, Kyrgios was asked if he would have thought of playing a practice match against the Serb and the Aussie gave a stern reply saying, “Absolutely not!”
He further went on to say, “I think it is just so important to have him around. Obviously, one of the greatest already left us last year, Roger [Federer] and I don’t think we actually knew how special these guys are to our sport. So every time Novak is around at one of these events, I will want to beat him – even if I can’t at a Grand Slam! – but it is very important to have him around because he is one of the most important [players] for our sport.”
Djokovic, the nine-time Australian Open winner is the fourth seed at the event. If things go well, we could well see a Djokovic-Kyrgios match in the quarter-finals in Melbourne Park. Nole starts against Roberto Carballes Baena while the Aussie mercurial takes on Roman Safiullin.
