Wally Masur, Australian legend and former Davis Cup coach is impressed with the changes that have come about in Nick Kyrgios. This year, Kyrgios has shown what he is capable of. Many believe his girlfriend Costeen Hatzi is a big influence in the life of the Australian and the reason for his comeback as a strong tennis player.

Masur also admires his helpful nature. “Nick has been living in Sydney and two days later (after the Australian Open), he was on the court with a young Australian player James McCabe. He spends time with them, he’s talking tennis with them, he’s encouraging them and he is a really good mentor to a lot of these kids coming through,” he said.

After winning the Australian Open title, Masur congratulated Kyrgios. “I said to Nick, ‘mate, well done, you’re a grand slam champion’,” the Australian legend said. “He sort of said sheepishly, ‘yeah, it’s only doubles’.”

“He also thinks winning the Australian Open title too renewed his competitive spirit and awakened his winning spirit. Winning that whet his appetite for more. (After) Covid and separation for the tour, he was kind of realizing what he’d missed,” he said. “And boy, did he light it up at Wimbledon. I was really encouraged by not just the result, but the way he was playing. We saw all of his ability – the full repertoire was there.”

At Wimbledon, He showed a resilient performance making it to the Final. He lost out to Novak Djokovic in the final. Next, he won with Thanasi Kokkinakis the men’s doubles title in Atlanta. In the US Open, he lost out to Karen Khachanov in the quarter-final.
