Nick Kyrgios hints at doubles pairing with Novak Djokovic in the 2023 season

Nick Kyrgios and Novak Djokovic

Novak Djokovic and Nick Kyrgios starting a bromance was one of the highlights of the 2022 season. The duo had always been at war for words with each other. With Kyrgios winning their first two encounters, the Aussie had the bragging rights. Djokovic however got a win back as he beat Kyrgios in the finals of the 2022 Wimbledon.

The bromance started in Australia earlier this year when Djokovic was caught up in Australian politics. Having refused to get the Covid-19 vaccine, Djokovic was kept in federal quarantine before being deported. With hours left for his first-round match at the 2022 Australian Open, Djokovic was forced to leave the country.

While the tennis world was divided on the subject, Kyrgios came out in support of the 21-time major winner. Kyrgios reminded everyone how Djokovic had always helped Australia. Djokovic played the charity matches for the Australian bushfire tragedy and always showed respect to the spectators in Melbourne Park.

Djokovic did not forget Kyrgios’ support and thanked him later once he returned to the court and their relationship improved from then. At the 2022 Wimbledon, they further bonded and by the end of the Grand Slam, it was officially a ‘Bromance.’ Kyrgios recently took to his Instagram Q&A and was asked, “The Nov-ick bromance is mode ON,” to which the Aussie replied, “If Novak is allowed in the USA we are playing doubles at Indian Wells. Y’all ready?”

Novak Djokovic‘s insistence on staying unvaccinated kept him out of the USA and Australia this year. After the fiasco in Australia, the Serb had complete clarity on the vaccination policy of the USA. Despite the efforts of the Serbian community in the USA and many Americans, Djokovic remained banned from entering the USA.

While Australia reversed its ban on Djokovic following the removal of its vaccine requirement rule for foreigners, the USA is yet to do the same. As a result, Djokovic remains ineligible for events in the USA. The first events in the USA every season are the Sunshine Double, the Indian Wells Masters, and the Miami Masters. The US Open leg series is then held in August. As of today, Djokovic remains unfit for participation.

With the new season hardly a few days away, Djokovic and his fans will be hoping he does indeed get the green signal to enter the USA. The added bonus of having Nick Kyrgios and Djokovic teaming up will be another factor that will keep the fans hoping that Washington changes its policy pretty soon.

Kyrgios will soon start his season at the 2023 United Cup hoping to win Australia the inaugural edition. As for Djokovic, he starts his season at the 2023 Adelaide International and will soon be reaching Australia to prepare for the season opener.
