Nick Kyrgios announcing his retirement from the 2023 Australian Open
The star Australian player recently posted an Instagram story in which he seemed to be ‘upset’. Nick Kyrgios posted a photo of himself playing in the 2022 Indian Wells masters, along with a ‘sad face emoji’. The Australian’s knee surgery seems to be not going well. Earlier this year, he pulled out of the 2023 Australian Open because of the same.
After an MRI detected a cyst caused by a minor lateral meniscus rupture, the 2022 Wimbledon finalist was disqualified from the Australian Open. The World no. 20 had to go through surgery to repair the joint and clean it out. He had planned to return for the Indian Wells Masters competition in March.
Kyrgios also shared a photo of himself taking pictures with fans along with the phrase, “Miss my fans.” The Australian star has been active on social media, uploading pictures of himself and spending time with loved ones. Last year, at the Indian Wells Masters, Kyrgios made a wild card entry, where he lost to Rafael Nadal in the quarter-finals.
Kyrgios’ volatile nature has already caused him a fine of around $800,000 USD. In 2022 too, during the Indian Wells tournament, Nick almost hit a ballboy with his racquet while playing against Rafa. He also entered a spat with a heckler and attacked Casper Ruud after defeating him in the third round.
Nick Kyrgios’ absence costs Channel nine viewership of the Australian Open
The Australian TV network forked out almost $500 million to extend its Grand Slam broadcasting contract until 2023. The competition suffered greatly from the absence of Barty and Kyrgios. Shortly after hoisting the trophy in Melbourne, three-time Grand Slam winner Barty announced his retirement from the game. Kyrgios, on the other hand, abruptly withdrew from the 2023 competition, citing a leg ailment.
The absence of the no. 1 Aussie, Nick Kyrgios, who is very popular with the home crowd, created a massive dent in the viewership. Almost 60% of the viewers decreased since last year. The doubles finals had astonishingly low numbers as compared to 2022. Channel nine surely suffered a major loss after the ordeal.
The 2023 Australian Open was won by Novak Djokovic, who became the 10-time champion and equaled Rafa’s Grand Slam record too. On the other hand, Aryna Sabalenka clinched her maiden Grand Slam title after defeating reigning Wimbledon champion, Elena Rybakina.
