Nick Kyrgios’ manager Daniel Horsfall recently revealed the lengths he had to go to to keep the star on track as he spiraled into a drinking habit due to the pressure of expectation he faced early in his career. The Australian exploded into global consciousness when he defeated Rafael Nadal in the fourth round of the Wimbledon Championships at the age of just 19.

This life-changing moment turned him from an unknown player to Australia’s next big sporting hope overnight. The weight of expectation clearly got to Kyrgios as he started acting impulsively and showing aggressive streaks. The mental toll of touring led to Kyrgios making bad decisions, as he himself says.

“When Horse (manager Daniel Horsfall) was on tour with me, when it was basically just him looking after me, he could just see my wellbeing just declining every week. My life was spiralling out of control – drinking every single night. I was like, ‘I can’t keep doing this. I have to be kinder to myself’,” Krygios said.

Horsfall supported the statement by saying to Kyrgios,” I used to have your location on my phone. On some mornings, I would physically have to go and find where you were. What hotel you were staying at, whose house you were staying at. Before tournaments … before a match.”

These revelations emerged when Netflix followed the Canberra native for the documentary Break Point. Having been known as the bad boy of tennis, the documentary shows a different side of Kyrgios. With Kyrgios’ mother, manager, and girlfriend all giving their point of view on the player’s rise, it is sure to be interesting viewing. Break Point will release on the 13th of January, just three days before Kyrgios plays in front of his home crowd at the Australian Open.

A look at Nick Kyrgios’ history of angry outbreaks

Nick Kyrgios is someone who plays with his heart on his sleeve. He is extremely ambitious and always looking to win while having fun on the court. His style has led to multiple flare-ups with referees, fans, and opponents.

His most recent moment came at the US Open when he destroyed two rackets during his quarter-final loss. He also verbally clashed with opponent Stefanos Tsitsipas and the umpire during his win over the Greek at the 2022 Wimbledon. The match was dubbed the most ill-tempered match of the Wimbledon by many.

The Australian has enjoyed the bad boy reputation these outbursts have given him. He frequently flexes the fact that his persona fills stadiums. He will be looking forward to more full houses from the Australian crowds soon at the first major of the year.
