Nick Kyrgios has been suffering from injury for the last few years. The 2023 season was particularly a difficult one for the Aussie, as he was just able to complete one ATP Tour match at the Stuttgart Open in June. Kyrgios lost that match to China’s Wu Yibing by 5-7, 3-6 hinting that the Aussie was not having the best of times in that court.
The 28-year-old also missed this year’s Australian Open due to a knee operation. He was to make a comeback in the summer, but an unfortunate wrist injury forced him to withdraw from the rest of the season.
The CEO of Tennis Australia Craig Tiley has hinted that there are still questions over the Australian’s fitness to compete for the first majors of the season. During a press conference in Melbourne on Thursday, Tiley said,
We have spoken to Nick, and he obviously wants to do the best he possibly can give himself the best chance to play in January. Nick's position will be determined closer to the event. Whether he's playing, whether he's doing something else, Nick will be here in January and to get him to play will be great. But we've got to take it as it comes and he's got to take care of his health because he's not just got January, he's got the entire year.
The 2022 Wimbledon finalist was present during the season-ending ATP Finals as part of the commentary panel. Kyrgios said during his commentary that stars would need to align for him to come back from injury and play in the Australian Open.
What’s next for Nick Kyrgios?
Nick Kyrgios has had an up-and-down career so far. The Aussie is only the third player to have beaten each one of the Big Three the first time he played against them. However, the 28-year-old has received criticism because of too much trash-talking in his matches. So far in his career, the Aussie has won seven Singles titles and 4 Doubles titles, including the most prominent 2022 Australian Open.
The Aussie would like to be fit and perform on the court as soon as possible because these are the peak years of his career. Craig Tiley feels that the wildcard exchanges they have with the French Open and Wimbledon can help Kyrgios to play there after coming back from injury. His fans and supporters hope that he comes back from injury as soon as possible.
