Nick Kyrgios
American tennis star Nick Kyrgios has a knack for grabbing headlines. In the last few weeks, he has consistently found a way to be the most talked about tennis player across social media platforms. This time, the 2022 Wimbledon finalist drew attention when he hit back at critics following his last-minute withdrawal from the United Cup.
Kyrgios had earlier confirmed his participation in the tournament for Australia. The 27-year-old maverick withdrew his name just before the pre-tournament press conference on Wednesday, citing a niggle. Kyrgios”s withdrawal attracted a lot of criticism, especially from journalists. The Aussie superstar remains unbothered.
Taunting his critics, Kyrgios first wrote, “Haha so after all this, all the media, journalism saying how bad I am for the sport, disrespecting the game & just a pure villain, I am going to be the number 1 episode on Netflix… to grow our fan base, basically trying to put tennis on the map again.” Kyrgios believes he remains immensely popular among fans despite the negative opinion about him.

In the next tweet, Kyrgios doubled down by demanding an apology from his critics. “And essentially putting more money in everyone’s pockets that’s involved with tennis, you all look really ridiculous now your apology should be as loud as your disrespect was,” the world No. 22 wrote with a couple of emojis.

Twitter fans come out in support of Nick Kyrgios
Australian star Nick Kyrgios withdrew from the tournament as he did not want to risk his body at the United Cup. Though it came as a huge surprise for everyone, an unfit Kyrgios would have failed to give his best for Australia in the United Cup. Still, the announcement drew ire from journalists.
The tweet of Kyrgios mocking the journalist for calling him a ‘pure villain’ got some instant responses from his fans. “Last laugh Nick,” one of the fans wrote. “I started watching tennis because of you,” wrote another. This confirmed the popularity of the tennis star. Here are some of the other reactions of the fans.
You’re the only player i’ve ever tuned in at 7 am to see what’s gonna happen during your match at an ATP 250 event. Fuck the media and the snobby old guard gatekeepers of tennis, netflix show will hopefully inspire more players to be as entertaining as you in the next gen ?

The tennis community is so rigid in their rules and regulations, they forget who’s actually making them money.

Though Kyrgios had to withdraw from the event, he was really excited to represent his country. No one knows when he will get a chance to do so in the coming season. As far as Kyrgios is concerned, he would be hoping to get fit for the Australian Open in the line. Kyrgios is also excited about Netflix’s Break Point and earlier called the docu-series ‘what tennis needs’.
