Former Australian Davis Cup captain Wally Masur has warned Nick Kyrgios with regards to his knee surgery. As per the captain himself, regardless of how talented he is, surgery could make or break a player solely on the basis of how he goes through rehab.

Nick Kyrgios has been struggling with injuries for the past year. After his incredible campaign at Wimbledon 2022, the Aussie has not done much on the Tour. Furthermore, he was forced to withdraw from Wimbledon and the US Open this year.

He announced that he would be undergoing surgery to deal with his injury. However, unfortunetly, shortly after his comeback, he was forced to pull out once again, this time due to a wrist injury.

At this point, Kyrgios was at the top of his game with a win at the Australian Open, where he won a doubles title with partner Thanasi Kokkinakis. He also made it to the final of Wimbledon and the quarterfinals of the US Open. However, Wally Masur, the Australian coach, had cautionary words for his compatriot.

As soon as I heard he was having knee surgery, I thought this was going to be tough for him because you need too be in certain shape before you go into surgery which changes everything in terms of rehab.

Masur also admitted that he was not aware of Nick’s routine off-court and warned that Kyrgios has to be ready to put in the rehab work. He also revealed that the audiences were apprehensive of his dedication to the sport. He further added:

It doesn't matter how talented you are, when you have that first surgery - especially being a big guy - if you're not doing the right things, then it's tough.

If Kyrgios is not willing to work twice as hard, it will be an ‘avalanche effect’ according to Masur.

Wally Masur admitted that Nick Kyrgios was crucial for Australian tennis at the moment

Australian coach Wally Masur further talked about how Nick Kyrgios plays an integral role in Australian tennis. While Kyrgios is out of the Tour, going through rehab after surgery, Masur has revealed that his return to the sport would be crucial for Australian tennis.

According to Masur, the big four have been dismantled in the past few years. However, he believes that this is the perfect opportunity for the next generation of players to win Majors. He believes that with proper rehab, Kyrgios will be one of the candidates to win a Grand Slam title with ease. He said:

Can he do it? Yes, but it probably comes down to motivation and making sure his body doesn't let him down. He's pretty crucial for Australian and World tennis, so it would be good to have him back.

With that being said, it seems like if his body cooperates, Kyrgios would be a leading candidate to win Slams in the near future.
