Nick Kyrgios is known to be one of the very few tennis players out there who wear hearts on their sleeves during matches. The Australian is very passionate and aggressive on the court, but it is not to everyone’s liking. One of the most epic and hilarious Kyrgios moments where he lost control of his anger took place at the 2019 Citi Open. Funnily enough, a young fan of Kyrgios recreated the incident on his Instagram story and the Aussie shared it on his account, which reminded fans about it.
Kyrgios faced Japan’s Yoshihito Nishioka in the Round of 16 of the tournament in Washington. The Australian had several highs and a few lows in the match and ultimately ended up winning it in straight sets.
However, the match was plenty controversial, as the Australian had yet another ‘temper tantrum’ in between the games. After losing a particular game, he was seen drinking water from his bottle. He tightened the lid steadily before throwing it into the base of the umpire’s chair so hard that the label got stuck in the Citi sign.
Chair umpire Gianluca Moscarella asked Kyrgios why he did it, to which the Aussie repeatedly replied,
It slipped out of my hand.
In the end, he received a warning for his unsportsmanlike conduct. Kyrgios was at the peak of his career back then and he proceeded to win the competition. He defeated Stefanos Tsitsipas in the semifinal and Daniil Medvedev in the final.
Thus, him sharing the story of the young kid was a refreshing throwback for the Aussie’s fans. Kyrgios has been out of action for a long time and it reminded fans once again of the days when the 2022 Wimbledon finalist was playing the best tennis of his life. At his best, Kyrgios was undoubtedly one of the most entertaining tennis players ever.
Nick Kyrgios thinks that Jannik Sinner could be the new Novak Djokovic
Kyrgios is currently out injured and his return date is not yet known. Thus, he had taken up a part-time role as a commentator on Eurosport’s team of panelists for the 2024 Australian Open. After Jannik Sinner won his first Grand Slam at the Australian Open, Kyrgios opined that Sinner could be the next Novak Djokovic, as he has many similarities to the Serb.
I just love the fact that Sinner compared. I love that comparison. He’s like him and Novak play similar. I can see it. After today, I definitely think that Sinner could be the new Novak. I mean [Carlos] Alcaraz obviously he's got that X factor maybe a little bit more flamboyant with his game style but Sinner is solidNick Kyrgios via Eurosport
As far as Kyrgios’ comeback is concerned, it is not happening anytime soon. The Australian has already announced that he won’t take part in the Indian Wells or the Miami Open.
