The 2023 edition of the Australian Open is almost halfway through and it is not turning out to be as anticipated by fans. First, the last-minute withdrawals of the top players like Carlos Alcaraz, Naomi Osaka, and Nick Kyrgios due to various reasons dimmed the excitement around the tournament. Later, some of the big players in both men’s and women’s sections were shown the exit route in the first week itself.

The unanticipated outcomes of stars falling uncharacteristically coupled with some ongoing controversies have definitely made the 2023 Australian Open one of the craziest in recent memory. Fans online have dubbed this edition as one of the most ‘boring’ ever.

This is the first time since 2002 when the Top 3 in the ATP rankings lost before the third round. In 2002, No. 1 Lleyton Hewitt and No. 2 Gustavo Kuerten were out from the first round, while No. 3 Andre Agassi did not participate. This has robbed fans of some tremendous encounters during the fortnight.

For the fans, the biggest disappointment was caused by the exit of injured Spanish icon Rafael Nadal. The defending champion was the top seed after the withdrawal of compatriot and World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz. In his second-round match against American  Mackenzie McDonald, Nadal faced a hip injury and lost in straight sets. That was the biggest shock for the tournament.

Later, as the Australian Open progressed, Norwegian World No. 3 Casper Ruud, American 25-year-old Taylor Fritz, and Alexander Zverev, who was on a comeback trail, were the ones to follow the suit. On the women’s side Tunisian World No. 2 Ons Jabeur crashed out after the second round. Madison Keys and Danielle Collins were not far behind in following Jabeur. On Friday, 7th seed Daniil Medvedev became the latest casualty.

Other than the exodus of the top seeds, the tournament has been marred by poor scheduling. When Andy Murray finished his epic battle against Thanasi Kokkinakis sunrise was just a couple of hours away. This, too, was a source of major backlash.

Amidst the drama on the courts, fans on social media have been pointing out the ‘boring’ Australian Open after a series of unanticipated news coming out of Melbourne Park. Here are some of the interesting comments.
