“No Pressure” Fabio Fognini issues Warning to Rafael Nadal ahead of US Open clash

Fabio Fognini & Rafael Nadal

Arthur Ashe Stadium is all set to witness the clash between Fabio Fognini and Rafael Nadal at the US Open later tonight. As enthusiastic the match sounds with both fans and crowd gripping nearing its showdown, the Fognini seems more when earlier today he issued boldening statements before the match.

The Italian while imparting his approach for the impending match, in a press conference portrayed himself as feeling free from pressure while quoting “I’m going to try to show my best level and have fun.” In addition to the statements addressed by him, the 35-year-old claimed himself as the underdog of the match, which seems ironic enough considering Nadal is acclaimed to be the ‘underdog of tennis.’

“His rating is very small,” a confident Fabio Fognini ahead his encounter with Rafael Nadal

Fabio Fognini

Fabio Fognini, who achieved his career-high rank of world No. 9 back in 2019, dispensed his feelings for the match quoting “I know it’s going to be very difficult. I know he’s the favorite, he’s everything. His rating is very small compared to mine,” acknowledged the second round US Open clash would be exacting facing one of the greatest tennis players of all time, Rafael Nadal which goes without saying as he stands against the crowd favorite.

“But we’ll see. I know how I should play. He knows me too, we both know each other very well,” commented Fognini who has faced the Spaniard numerous times and has won 17 head-to-head matches against him. Their confrontation back in 2015 ended with Fabio coming back from two sets down, ultimately turning out to be a huge upset for Rafa.

Notable Fabio’s most favored court is red clay same as Rafa’s, with one of his most distinguished performances seen at the Monte-Carlo Masters. Surprisingly, he has never moved past round four at the New York courts, and with his confident statements issued, it seems likely to be changed if he can overpower the Spanish.

Fognini overcame the Russian tennis professional, Aslan Karatsev’s challenge in the first round, summing up the match with a rather tedious and dragged-out score of 1-6, 5-7, 6-4, 6-1, 6-4.
