World No. 1 Novak Djokovic ended his ATP Finals group stage matches with a victory against Polish star Hubert Hurkacz, who came in place of injured Stefanos Tsitsipas. The Serbian, however, seemed rather upset during his post-match interview, which concluded in a mere 20 seconds.
The interviewer asked what happened to him as he seemed a little angry in the second set. On this Djokovic displayed a bit surprise on the question.
Why? Why was I upset? For what? I lost the match...I mean I lost the set, so it's normal.
Djokovic also stated that it was a “good win” to conclude the extremely short interview. The 6-time ATP Final winner entered the match in view of beating his opponent in straight sets to confirm his semi-final spot.
However, the mix was still open for the young Dane to qualify when Hurkacz won the second set of the match. With this, Jannik Sinner qualified for the semi-finals and Djokovic had to bank on the Italian to beat Rune.
Luckily for him, Sinner managed to beat Rune in three sets to carry Novak across the line and into the semi-finals of the ATP Finals. Djokovic could not qualify on his own terms and this might have been one of the reasons for his frustration after the match.
Novak Djokovic in line for 7th ATP Finals title
Djokovic ends up as No. 2 in the green group as Sinner beat Rune in an epic showdown to end his group stage matches undefeated. The Italian had beaten Stefanos Tsitsipas, Novak Djokovic, and Holger Rune to achieve this feat. However, Sinner won, ensuring that Djokovic could stay for a few more days and have a possible shot at his 7th ATP Finals title.
The World No. 1 has an incredible record in this tournament. He has managed to qualify for the ATP Finals on 16 occasions, winning 6 out of those. Djokovic still maintains his record of 48 wins in this tournament and only 18 losses.
After qualifying for the semi-finals, the Serb will face the winner of the red group to try and qualify for the finals. The red group matches are yet to be played as the whole world awaits the next opponent for the Serb. Despite the result, Djokovic will end the year as No. 1 for the 8th time in his career.
