Roger Federer retired last year after playing at the Laver Cup and Rafael Nadal has been recuperating from injury and has missed playing in tournaments since the Australian Open this year. And that is why, Federer’s former coach Ivan Ljubicic opined that as Federer and Nadal have not played this year, current World No.1 and World No.2, Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic, have separated themselves from the rest of the pack.

Djokovic, at 36, is still one of the most formidable players across all the Grand Slam events. But Alcaraz is a rising star and he has dethroned the Serb from the top rankings twice- first after winning the 2022 US Open and then after he clinched his maiden trophy at the Queen’s Club Championships prior to participating at SW19.

And that is why, Ljubicic, who coached the Swiss maestro from 2016 until his retirement, believes, these two, Djokovic and Alcaraz, are way ahead of the rest of the players. Ljubicic also named Daniil Medvedev as a player who is one of the strongest ones on the hard courts but finds it tough on clay and grass.

I think the results show it as well, they (Alcaraz and Djokovic) hardly lose to somebody else other than when they play against each other. Alcaraz still needs to show that he can beat Novak, especially in the slams,” said Ljubicic, who now works as a pundit for Sky Italia (via Tennismajors.com).

Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic will be clashing against each other in the final of the 2023 Wimbledon Championships on Sunday (July 16). The Serb has a chance to not only equal Roger Federer’s record of eight titles at SW19 but can join two other greats by winning the season’s first three Grand Slam tournaments twice.

The 36-year-old has already broken the record by winning the most Grand Slam titles in Men’s Singles and is aiming to bag his 24th one. On the other hand, Alcaraz’s victory will make him the third youngest to win the Wimbledon title. He will be playing his first final at the All-England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club.

The Serbian legend has won a whopping 34 matches on the trot at the Wimbledon and interestingly, he hasn’t lost a match since 2013 and this final will be his 35th one at Grand Slam tournaments. Alcaraz, though he hasn’t got much experience like Nole, has weapons with which he can upset the seven-time Wimbledon champion.
