Since Jannik Sinner‘s spectacular comeback to defeat Daniil Medvedev at the Australian Open final, the Italian’s victory became a major record breaker in tennis. After an outstanding display in Melbourne, he now sits with the legends like Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic, to replicate their major feat.

The 22-year-old became the 3rd Italian player to win a Men’s Singles Grand Slam event in tennis history after Nicola Pietrangeli (Roland Garros 1959 and 1960) and Adriano Panatta (French Open 1976). In November last year, Sinner also helped his country win the first Davis Cup in over thirty years.

The star has since been putting Italy at the center of tennis and when he defeated Andrey Rublev, Novak Djokovic, and Daniil Medvedev to claim his maiden major title at the Australian Open, he became the 3rd player to claim successive ATP top 5 wins in the quarterfinal, semifinal, and final at a major tournament on a hard court, after Federer (US Open 2007) and Djokovic (Australian Open 2012).

He also became the 3rd youngest player to win the Men’s Singles title at the Australian Open since 1988 (when the tournament moved to Melbourne Park), older only than Novak Djokovic in 2008 and Jim Courrier in 1992.

The Italian, who was well-received by his countrymen and his Prime Minister, would be hoping to continue in his excellent form of 25 wins and two defeats since October. He has also become a favourite to take the place of the retired Roger Federer in tennis, winning back-to-back titles but may be unlikely to break Djokovic’s 24 Grand Slam record.

Jannik Sinner’s Success Story

The Australian crowned King Jannik Sinner was nicknamed Jane the Fox during his school days because he was known for his surprising methods. At 13, his parents let him focus on tennis, five years later he won the 2019 Next Gen ATP Finals in Milan and has since then become a player to be admired.

In 2020, he reached his maiden Grand Slam quarter-final at the French Open. The following year, the Italian became the youngest ATP 500 Washington champion. Moreover, he ended as runner-up at the Miami Open that year and got into the top 10 for the first time. In 2022, he got to the semifinals of Wimbledon and the quarterfinals of the US Open.

All the pieces were coming together gradually and in 2023, he won his first Masters 1000 by beating Daniil Medvedev in the final in Shanghai. He won two ATP 500 titles and reached the final of the ATP Finals Championship in Turin before leading his country to Davis Cup victory in November.

At the 2024 Australian Open, the Italian ended Novak Djokovic’s six-year stranglehold before defeating Daniil Medvedev in the final.
