Two years ago, Daniil Medvedev succeeded in blocking Novak Djokovic‘s route to history and preventing him from completing a Calendar Grand Slam, but this time he came short. The Serbian defeated the Russian in three sets in the US Open final to claim his 24th Major championship.

Following the defeat, Medvedev joked about how Novak still hadn’t calmed down and, despite being 36 years old, still maintained the highest bar. The Russian further added that it was also his wedding anniversary today. He remarked that he was sorry to his wife that their wedding gift turned out to be such a flop.

Medvedev said,“Two years ago I won here and I talked about what a great gift it was for my wife. Today is sh*t. Normally the dates change, but today is Sunday again: wedding anniversary. I thought: come on, do it again! But this did not happen.”

Hearing this, Novak Djokovic also poked fun at the situation. Nole playfully apologized to the third seed and his wife Daria Medvedev for ruining their anniversary.

He quipped,”Sorry for today’s outcome, and please don’t take this the wrong way, but happy wedding anniversary to your wife. I’m sorry! (smile). I with all my heart. If I knew that today was your anniversary, then maybe..you know.. the result.”

Despite showing signs of exhaustion, the four-time US Open winner did what he always does under pressure: he found a way to win. The man who will reclaim the top spot in the Pepperstone ATP Rankings on Monday won a grueling 104-minute second set in which he saved a set point and then sprinted victory.

Djokovic began to rely more on his drop shot, bailing out of points to avoid going blow for blow with Medvedev. At 3-4, the Serbian ace saved a breakpoint with a brilliant half-volley drop shot. However, as Medvedev drew out rallies, the sense of importance at the end of the set grew. Medvedev had a chance to tie the match on his set point, but instead fell two sets behind.

Medvedev attempted a comeback from two sets behind for the third time in his career, but his loss in the second set appeared to destroy his chances. Djokovic broke early in the set, and although he gave it right back (his first service game loss in the tournament), Medvedev was unable to capitalize.

Djokovic created history by becoming the first male player to have 24 Grand Slam Titles.
