Novak Djokovic absolutely demolished his opponent, Ben Shelton, in the semi-final round to book his ticket to the Finals of the 2023 US Open. The Serb has been eyeing his 24th Grand Slam title win at the ongoing US Open after he recently broke Roger Federer‘s record for reaching the most number of Grand Slam semi-finals.

The 36-year-old beat his opponent, dominating the American in three straight sets. Shelton came into the spotlight after beating 14th seed, Tommy Paul, at the fourth round of the Flushing Meadows. The 20-year-old is known for his high-speed serves. However, Shelton’s serves were unable to sway Djokovic from his ultimate goal of clinching the US Open title.

The semi-final clash between the two ended with Djokovic scoring 6-3, 6-2, 7-6 against the American. However, after sealing his semi-final round victory after a tie-breaker third set, Djokovic was seen celebrating his win by imitating Shelton’s celebratory gesture that he did after defeating tenth seed, Frances Tiafoe.

Other than tennis, something else that Djokovic is great at is giving subtle burns to his opponents after winning a match against them. Novak not only repeated the American’s gesture but also added his own twist to it. Djokovic will now be up against third seed, Daniil Medvedev, who defeated the Serb at the Finals two years back in 2021 at the same stadium grounds.

The World No. 2, Novak Djokovic beat America’s Ben Shelton on Friday to advance to the finals. What irked the fans and spectators, however, was the Serb’s celebratory gesture after defeating the 20-year-old. Viewers did not like the fact that Djokovic seemed to mock the American and called his gesture “unsportsmanlike”.

Tennis fans deemed Djokovic’s taunt as unnecessary while others claimed that he’s “(100%) not worthy of a champion”. Check out some reactions to Novak Djokovic’s hanging up-the-phone celebration below.

The tennis fans are divided on Djokovic copying Shelton. Many called him out on being “disrespectful” and deemed his gesture as childlike since the two are 16 years apart in age.

With his win over the American, the 36-year-old has booked himself in for a US Open Finals rematch against World No. 3, Daniil Medvedev. The two had clashed on the Arthur Ashe courts in the final round when Novak last played at the Flushing Meadows back in 2021. Medvedev had beat the Serb then to claim the title in 2021.
