After the victory at the season-ending ATP Finals championship, Novak Djokovic continued his sublime form at the Davis Cup. Serbia defeated Britain in the quarter-finals of the Davis Cup and booked the semifinal spots.
It was a best-of-three-tie match format and Miomir Kecmanovic had already beaten Jack Draper by 7-6(7-2) 7-6(8-6) in the opening match. This win in the opening match meant that Cameron Noorie had to have the upper hand over Djokovic to keep the semifinal hopes for Britain alive.
However, with a fierce momentum this season, it was all too much for Noorie to get past the Serbian. Much to everyone’s expectations, the World No. 1 displayed his class and booked the semifinal spot for Serbia with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Noorie.
Djokovic ensured that there was little drama on the court with a dominating performance. However, things got a bit spicy when some of the British fans booed Djokovic and tried to heckle him prior to his post-match interview.
Nole too reacted fiercely, fully in the heat of the moment as he told some of those fans to shut up and also cupped his ears. The Serbian feel that it is normal sometimes, but they must show some respect. During the match, the Britain fans were constantly trying to heckle and annoy the Serbian ace.
Even during the post-match conference, they began to play the drums so that the Serb doesn’t talk. This behavior from the side of fans is understandable as their team lost in the quarterfinals, but a line should be drawn.
Novak Djokovic eyes another silverware at the Davis Cup
After a victory over Cameron Noorie and guiding Serbia to the semifinals spot of the Davis Cup, Djokovic is in the hunt for adding another trophy to his cabinet. Serbia would be facing Italy in the semifinals and there is a chance that Djokovic faces Jannik Sinner, a third meetup in less than two weeks. However, the Serb would be confident after such a dominating win over Noorie as he dropped just eight points and scored 16 forehand winners, almost double that of Noorie.
Djokovic, who helped Serbia win their first Davis Cup title in 2010, has his eyes set on winning it for the second time. This is not an over-the-top statement at all, keeping in mind the form that the 36-year-old is in. With the support of his other teammates, Nole can seal another Davis Cup title for Serbia. After the 2-0 victory over Great Britain, Serbia would be facing Italy in the semis on Saturday.
The World No. 1 has had a fantastic season so far. Even at the twilight of his career, Nole has been a class apart winning the US Open, French Open, Australian Open, and the ATP Finals besides reaching the finals of Wimbledon. The Serb would like to finish the season on a high by winning a second Davis Cup for his nation.
