Former tennis player Laura Robson has recently fired a grace statement against recent Cincinnati champion Novak Djokovic, claiming that the Serbian will go to the upcoming US Open as an absolute “underdog”.
Djokovic has already won the competition three times in the past and is set to return to it after a two-year gap, as he was not allowed to participate in the competition for not abiding by the COVID protocols.
The World No. 2 had been barred from competing in two sessions and was under a lot of pressure after having his World No. 1 spot snatched away from him ahead of the Wimbledon Championships. And after losing the Wimbledon final against Carlos Alcaraz, he was called by many as the second favorite for all the tournaments ahead. Laura talked about how much she enjoyed Djokovic’s loss at Centre Court a month ago and wants Alcaraz to go the distance at the US Open as well.
She said, “I think I would like to see him get to 24. You know, the numbers are crazy, no matter which way you look at them. The fact that he’s even competing for 24 is absurd, and I think it would be great for tennis to have him as a 24-time Grand Slam champion – there’s sort of no conversation left to be had about in terms of numbers, who is the greatest of all time.”
Continuing her train of thoughts, she further added, “I can never see anyone replicating what he’s been able to do over his career. I’d like to see him get to 24, and I’d love to see a bit of a rivalry unfold with Alcaraz because they seem to bring out the best in each other.”
What did Alcaraz and Djokovic say about one another after the Cincinnati final?
After losing the Cincinnati final against Djokovic even after leading the match by a set, Alcaraz was brought down in tears. Both players shared one of the greatest ‘non-major’ finals of this decade, taking two of the three sets to tiebreaks. Although Djokovic had the last laugh, the crowd roared in respect for both players, who gave it their all on the court that night.
During the on-court interview, both players congratulated and complimented one another on their performance. Alcaraz said, “I almost beat one of the greatest of all time from our sport. It’s amazing playing against you, sharing the court with you, learning from you. This match was really close, but I learned a lot from a champion like you.” On the other hand, Djokovic said, “Definitely one of the toughest matches I’ve ever played in my life, regardless what tournament, what category, what level, what player. It’s unbelievable.”
