Karen Khachanov triumphed at the Zhuhai Championships and won his first title in 5 long years. He posted a picture of himself on his social media handle, holding and cherishing the Trophy. Serbian legend, Novak Djokovic congratulated Karen on his win.
Karen Khachanov was out of action for a while after the French Open this year and returned to court during the US Open, where the Russian had a first-round exit. He won his first title in 5 years. The previous title that he won was the Paris Masters in 2018, where he defeated Novak Djokovic to win the trophy.
Karen Khachanov faced Yoshihito Nishioka in the finals of the Zhuhai Championships, defeating him 7-(6), 6-1 to lift the trophy. The Russian took to social media to celebrate his victory. He captioned the post stating, ” It was a long wait but it was worth it! This win is for my wife and my sons. Missed this feeling! Super happy.” This is the second title of his career.
Novak Djokovic congratulated the Russian on his well-deserved victory and commented on his post saying, “Bravo Brate (brother).” It was indeed a much-needed victory for Khachanov which also ended his 5 year drought period without winning a title.
Novak Djokovic and Karen Khachanov have faced each other 10 times
Karen Khachanov and Novak Djokovic have played against each other on 10 occasions, with the Serb leading the head-to-head by a one-sided 9-1 lead. The only time the Russian triumphed over the World No.1 was at the Paris Masters in 2018, which remains the highest title of his career. The last time the 2 met was at the French Open this year, where the 36-year-old prevailed victorious in a challenging match that lasted 4 sets.
Novak Djokovic led his country to the quarter-finals of the Davis Cup and has also announced his withdrawal from the Shanghai Open in China. He will next play at the Paris Masters. The Serbian has taken some time out from the sport to compete at the Ryder Cup in Rome. His decision to skip a few tournaments in the season can pose a threat to him finishing the year as World No.1. Carlos Alcaraz and Daniil Medvedev will be looking to take advantage of this opportunity as the 2 are not far behind the Serb in terms of ranking.
