“Novak Djokovic couldn’t do anything” Former French Open champion heaps praise on Stan Wawrinka for being a rare multi-major winner in the era of Big-3
Stan Wawrinka and Novak Djokovic
Former World No. 3 Stan Wawrinka remains one of the only two players since 2006 to win more than 1 Grand Slam title in the men’s singles discipline. Wawrinka is a 3-time Grand Slam champion winning the Australian Open in 2014, the French Open in 2015 and the US Open in 2016 with the Wimbledon title keeping him from joining an elite list of players to have won all 4 majors at least once.
Wawrinka’s backhand has been rated as one of the best ever in the sport with the Swissman one of the few to play one-handed backhand. While Stan has been suffering from injuries over the past couple of seasons, the 37-year-old’s portfolio does not go unnoticed while his absence is noted by a lot of tennis enthusiasts.
“I have a soft spot for Stan Wawrinka”: Jimmy Arias
Speaking about Wawrinka’s career, former World No. 5 Jimmy Arias, best known for his 1981 French Open mixed doubles title with compatriot Andrea Jaeger, was full of praise for Stan and highlighted that in an era where the Big-3 dominated massively, Wawrinka’s 3 titles should not go unnoticed given he defeated then World No. 1 ranked players at all times as Rafael Nadal lost to him in Australia while Novak Djokovic suffered the defeat in Paris and New York at the hands of Stan.
“I have a soft spot for Stan Wawrinka as well because of his three Grand Slams and the fact that he absolutely smashes his backhand with incredible speed. When he’s in form, he’s the only player I’ve seen capable of dominating Novak Djokovic in rallies from the baseline, forehand and backhand. Djokovic couldn’t do anything when Stan was wild in the Grand Slam finals,” said Arias speaking with Tennis Channel.
All three Grand Slam wins were won in 4-sets by Wawrinka and apart from him, only former World No. 1 Andy Murray remains the only other man to have won multiple Grand Slam titles glorifying the Swiss’ victories furthermore given he is also an Olympics Gold medal winner having won the Doubles Gold with Roger Federer at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
