Jannik Sinner has finally fulfilled the expectations of his fans. The 22-year-old is officially a Grand Slam title winner having won the 2024 Australian Open. The Italian had to survive an epic battle before emerging victorious against World No. 3 Daniil Medvedev in the title decider.
Sinner won the Grand Slam title 3-6, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-3 over 3 hours and 44 minutes on a packed Rod Laver Arena. With two sets down, not many would have thought the debutant could find a way back. But in all likeliness, he took a page from Rafael Nadal‘s book to beat the Russian.
Medvedev came into the finals on the back of a stellar record of 50-1 in Grand Slam hardcourt matches. The only loss was incurred by the former US Open champ against the Spaniard in the 2022 Australian Open finals. He was cruising with a 2-set lead but could not hold back the King of Clay’s historic comeback.
Despite fitness concerns, Medvedev put on a great show alongside Sinner and they were rightly lauded by 10-time Australian Open winner Novak Djokovic. The Serb was this year’s defending champion but lost to the Italian in the semis in what was his self-claimed ‘worst Grand Slam performance‘.
Nole however showed his class in appreciating the two players following their epic Australian Open final. He took to his Instagram stories to send congratulatory messages to both the finalists.
Bravo Jannik! Well deserved Congratulations to your family and team.wrote Djokovic for the Italian champ.
Huge effort from Daniil! Tough luck today but amazing tournament you did.wrote Nole for the runner-up.
Jannik Sinner joins an exclusive club of Australian Open winners
The win in Melbourne Park takes Jannik Sinner into an extremely exclusive club. Apart from becoming the youngest Italian player to win a Grand Slam, he is also only the 3rd Italian man to win a Grand Slam singles title. In the Open Era, he is just the 2nd Italian man after Adriano Panatta to lift a Major.
The World No. 4 also joins Djokovic (2008, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2015, 2016, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2023), Nadal (2009, 2022) and Stan Wawrinka (2014) as only the 4th active man to have won the Australian Open title.
As for Medvedev, the wait for his maiden title in Melbourne Park continues. He has now lost three finals with all of them coming in the last four seasons. He lost to Djokovic in 2021, to Nadal in 2022, and now to Sinner.
Straight-set wins over Karen Khachanov and Andrey Rublev, a four-set win over Djokovic in the semis, and an epic comeback in the finals against Medvedev, it’s only fitting that Sinner is the one to lift the title. One can only wish luck to Medvedev who will have to try once again in the coming seasons.
