Serbian tennis icon Novak Djokovic is looking all set to extend his record of nine titles in the 2023 Australian Open. In the first week of the tournament, he did not face any difficulty and put out his prime form. The 21-time Grand Slam champion advanced to the quarterfinals with ease despite having an injury concern. 

After defeating Australian Alex de MInaur in straight sets, Djokovic extended his winning streak in Australian Open to 25. Later, In the press conference, Djokovic was asked about how it feels like to be the only Grand Slam winner remaining in the tournament and the young players that could challenge him. Talking about Stefanos Tsitsipas, Djokovic forgot that the Greek star has reached a grand slam final which turned funny for a moment.

“I know Tsitsipas, for example, is probably the most experienced guy out of all of them, all the quarterfinalists. He has played already the final stages of a Grand Slam quite a few times,” Djokovic said. Later he got confused about whether the Greeks has played in a final of a Grand Slam or not. “I think he has never played finals, am I wrong?” he asked.

When someone reminded him about the 2021 final in the French Open where he faced the Greek, Djokovic apologized with a smile. “That’s right. That’s right. Sorry, my bad,” he said. “I wanted to compliment him because he is someone that looks ready to go for the title and the way he has been playing he is coming closer and closer,” Djokovic continued in praising Tsitsipas.

Novak Djokovic is steady on the path to the 10th title in Melbourne

On Monday the Serbian icon moved one step closer to the 10th Australian Open title after defeating Alex de Minaur with ease. Djokovic has been so dominant over his opponent that he has dropped only one set on his way to the quarterfinals. Many of the top seeds including Rafael Nadal have bowed out of the tournament but the 35-year-old remains steady on his quest. 

In the match against Minaur, Djokovic showed no sign of his hamstring injury which will further boost Djokovic’s confidence. As Djokovic is progressing in the tournament he is becoming even more ruthless. “Because I wanted to,” Djokovic said after the match responding to a question about defeating Minaur in straight sets. 

In the quarterfinal on Wednesday, Djokovic will lock horns with Russian Andrey Rublev who overcame Holger Rune in a five-set epic clash. Other than Rublev, Tsistsipas is the only player who has the capacity and the experience to derail Djokovic march. Djokovic, on the other hand, is already a nine-time champion in Melbourne and well-equipped to deal with any type of hurdle.
