Novak Djokovic with ATP Finals Trophy
Serbian professional player Novak Djokovic is currently one of the most formidable names in the realm of tennis. The Serb has an impeccable record in the ATP Finals tournaments, winning his first-ever title way back in 2008 against none other than Nikolay Davydenko 6-1, 7-5 in the title clash. The tennis sensation then went on a winning spree from 2012 to 2015, clinching the year-ending championship title for a record four times in a row.
While the Serb has suffered semifinal defeats in the last two years, he has an extremely strong chance of winning it this year given the incredible performances he has been showcasing throughout 2022. He will try to win the tournament for a record sixth time, equaling Roger Federer’s record of winning the tournament six times.
For those uninitiated, the year-ending championship tournament will be played between 13th November to 20th November.
In a recent video posted by the official Twitter handle of the ATP Tour, Novak Djokovic can be seen finally making his way to the beautiful city of Turin, Italy as he targets the 2022 ATP Finals trophy. “Showing fans some love!” ATP Tour caption read.
As expected, people on social media are loving the ease with which Novak Djokovic is exploring the city and interacting with his fans. Judging by the comments, while the majority of the commenters welcomed the tennis legend to Turin, a few even wished him luck for the upcoming clashes. Sharing a wide spectrum of reactions online, here’s what fans had to say:
Novak Djokovic targets Roger Feder’s ATP Finals record
Novak Djokovic has won the tournament 5 times. Rafael Nadal played in the Championship match at ATP Finals in 2013 and was defeated by the Serb in straight sets. The two greats are drawn into opposite groups. The 21-time Grand Slam champion is drawn in the Red Group with Stefanos Tsitsipas, Daniil Medvedev, and Andrey Rublev. On the other hand, the 22-time Grand Slam champion will play against World No. 1 Casper Ruud, Felix Auger-Aliassime, and Taylor Fritz in the Green Group.
Both the greats are in the twilight of their careers. However, both are still playing their best tennis. The Spaniard has won two Grand Slams this season, including the Australian Open and the French Open. He also reached the semi-finals round of Wimbledon. However, the Serb missed out on two important tournaments, the Australian Open, and the US Open, due to his unvaccinated status against the COVID-19 virus. But he managed to win Wimbledon and a host of other tournaments.
While the duo has managed to keep challengers away from the podium, by the whip of their sheer brilliance and experience, the young generation is catching up at an unbelievable pace. The prestigious tournament this year is showing how close the young generation is to toppling the legends of their privileged thrones.
Most of the players are below 30 years old. Tsitsipas and Medvedev have already won the tournament before. However, some prominent professionals like Felix Auger-Aliassime, Rublev, and Fritz are playing in this competition for the very first time. Casper Ruud has competed before.
