Novak Djokovic has rewritten history by defeating Ben Shelton in the semi-final of the 2023 US Open, breaking his own record for the most Grand Slam finals played by a player in any era. Previously, the record was held by Chris Evert, who had appeared in 34 Grand Slam finals. Novak Djokovic broke that record two months ago when he made it to the final of the 2023 Wimbledon Open. With his victory over Ben Shelton, he has now guaranteed himself a place in the 36th Grand Slam final of his career.

The Serbian schooled the 20-year-old American youngster throughout the match. Although Ben Shelton gave it his all, he was up against perhaps the best tennis player ever, and the level was just too high. Novak Djokovic won the match 6-3, 6-2, 7-6 (7-4).

The first two sets were pretty one-sided, as the World No. 2 totally dominated the youngster, giving him no chance at all. He fought back pretty efficiently in the third set and even took it to the tie-breaker against all odds. However, the Serb was able to hold his nerve and ended up easing past Ben Shelton for a superb victory.

With this, Djokovic is now just one win away from the 24th Grand Slam of his career, which he has been looking forward to for a few months now. He came close to winning it at the Wimbledon Open but was stopped by Carlos Alcaraz in the final. He will now face the winner between Carlos Alcaraz and Daniil Medvedev in the final. Tennis fans across the globe can not wait to witness yet another potential classic finale between Alcaraz and Djokovic where the Serb might finally get an opportunity to avenge his loss in the Wimbledon final.

The Serb never backs down from making a joke or two in his on-court interviews and he did exactly the same upon being asked about his potential opponent in the final, which will be either Daniil Medvedev or Carlos Alcaraz depending on the result of their semifinal. He said that it will be a pretty interesting match to watch and he can now do that while relaxing as he is already into the final.

“Both are amazing players. Daniil beat me here a few years ago.. What Carlos achieved at only 20 years of age is fantastic. It’s gonna be a great match for me to watch with my feet in the air, popcorn, & good drinks,” said Novak Djokovic.
