The captain of Serbia’s Davis Cup team has stated that the team has the potential to make significant progress if Novak Djokovic decides to participate. This follows the team’s draw alongside Spain, the Czech Republic, and the Republic of Korea for the group stage in September. In the event that both Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz compete for their respective countries, they could face each other on the court. It is less likely that Rafael Nadal will represent Spain.

The draw for the group stage of the Davis Cup Finals occurred on Wednesday, and it revealed that Serbia and Spain have been placed in the same section for the second consecutive year. They will compete in Group C, with the tournament taking place in Valencia from September 12 to 17. If Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz choose to play for their countries, there could be an exciting matchup between the world’s top two players in September. However, Djokovic withdrew from representing Serbia in the group stage last year, citing “personal reasons.”

Serbia’s Davis Cup captain, Viktor Troicki, has emphasized the significance of having Novak Djokovic on the team, as he believes it will increase their likelihood of success. He expressed his delight in being in the group stage of the Davis Cup World Group this year, according to an interview he gave to Telegraf. He continued “I’m sure we can get through this group and qualify for the final competition in November. If our number one tennis player Novak Djokovic is in the team with him, we can definitely go far in this competition.

Carlos Alcaraz played for Spain at the group stage of the Davis Cup in 2022, marking his debut after winning the US Open and achieving the world No. 1 ranking. However, he had to withdraw from the Davis Cup Finals in November after sustaining an injury at the Paris Masters. As a result, he will most likely be keen to rejoin the squad this year.

The world’s top-ranked tennis player, Novak Djokovic, will retain his world no.1 ranking for the 381st week despite not playing in Indian Wells and Miami due to his vaccination status. He will still participate in Monte Carlo as the top player. Spanish tennis player Carlos Alcaraz won his third Masters 1000 crown in Indian Wells, allowing him to surpass Djokovic briefly.

To retain his 1000 ATP points and stay ahead of Djokovic in the rankings before the clay season, Carlos Alcaraz had to defend his Miami Open title. The teenager won his first four matches but lost to Jannik Sinner in the semi-finals after a three-hour match, relinquishing his top-ranking spot.

Djokovic and Alcaraz are set to compete in Monte Carlo for the top spot in men’s tennis. If they face each other in the title match, the winner will become the leading figure in men’s tennis. Alcaraz ended the previous season as the youngest year-end no. 1 in the ATP rankings.
