World No. 2 Novak Djokovic rolled back the years on Saturday after he beat Laslo Djere in their third-round encounter, having fallen two sets down in the first sector of the match. With many fans in the stadium looking shocked with their hands on their heads, Nole produced one of the greatest comebacks in the sport, finally winning the match by a scoreline of 6-4, 6-4, 1-6, 1-6, 3-6.
Novak shared his view on what it was like to win the match after falling behind in the first two sets during his post-match press conference. He joked about how he is happy to still be able to stand on the court for five long sets and perform at his best even at this age. Apart from that, he stated that he would not want himself to be in this kind of position in the future and to get the job done in straight sets if possible.
Djokovic said, “Of course winning a match is always better than losing a match. It’s as simple as that. I think the message is sent to the rest of the field that obviously I’m still able to play five sets deep at night. Coming from two sets down always sends a strong message to the future opponents. At the same time, I’m not really wanting to be in this position, to be honest. I prefer a straight-sets win. Hopefully, I can get back on that track in the next match.”
How has Novak Djokovic fared so far at the US Open?
Novak Djokovic is on the hunt for his fourth US Open title, and it’s the only competition that he has not won in the last five years. Having missed the last two sessions of the competition due to COVID protocols, he has looked fearless this year, with his indications clear on making it out of the year with three Slams, with the Australian Open and the Roland Garros already in his bag.
He started the competition in fine form, beating Alexandre Muller in the very first round in straight sets, 6-0, 6-2, 6-3, setting up a second-round encounter with Bernabe Zapata Miralles. He won the match in the same dominant fashion, progressing to the third round with a 6-4, 6-1, 6-1 win over the Spaniard. He survived a great scare in his third-round battle against Laslo Djere, finally emerging victorious in the five-set thriller, setting up a fourth-round clash against Borna Gojo.
