Serbian tennis icon Novak Djokovic just surpassed the all-time record of Steffi Graf for the most weeks at the top of the rankings. The 35-year-old, who rose to the peak in July 2011 for the first time, took less than 12 years to amass 378 weeks as the World No. 1 and firmly establish himself as one of the greatest of the game. 

Djokovic is currently participating in the Dubai Tennis Championships after being crowd the winner of the 2023 Australian Open. After his first-round win, the tournament celebrated Djokovic’s monumental feat where a clip from his childhood stole the show.

In that clip, a 7-year-old Djokovic was asked about his goal in tennis. “My goal is to become number one,” he promptly replies. After being asked about what will that little boy think about this achievement, Djokovic entertained the crowd with his hilarious answer.

“I guess he would not be surprised because he knew,” Djokovic responded. “Of course at that time I dreamt a lot. I dreamt big dreams. That was my biggest dream. Well, I used my imagination pretty well. But at that point, I could not imagine that I would get this far. I really believed that I could one day become the No. 1 tennis player in the world but to stay these many weeks in the ranking spot is definitely something that surprised me too.”

Novak Djokovic starts his campaign in Dubai after a scare

The Serb returned to action this week after his historical success Down Under. He started his campaign in Dubai by defeating qualifier Tomas Machac but not before the match went into the final set tie-breaker. 

“Of course, there’s a lot to be happy about tonight. I think the fighting spirit was there. Tie-break was as good as it can be,” Djokovic said after the match. “I will take it day by day and see where it can go.”

“Credit to him, he went for his shots, especially down the line backhand, serve, and volley. He didn’t miss one volley. It was unbelievable. He played on such a high quality. He wasn’t missing at all,” Djokovic further added while praising his opponent. This is the Serb’s 13th appearance in the tournament and this year he is the absolute favorite as well.
