Another season begins with another title. This is the single most important highlight of the illustrious career of Serbian star Novak Djokovic. Year after year since rising on the tennis scene the 21-time Grand Slam winner has been crowned with at least one ATP Tour title. With a title win at the Adelaide International last evening Djokovic has matched Roger Federer’s record of 18 consecutive seasons with at least one ATP Tour title.
Djokovic overcame the Sebastien Korda challenge in the well-fought final in Adelaide. The match went on for three sets with the first two decided by a tie-breaker. In the end, Djokovic did what he does best and registered a victory over the American opponent 6-7, 7-6, 6-4.
With the first title of the season, Djokovic has inched closer to his Spanish rival in the same list. Nadal has gone on for 19 consecutive years with at least one Tour title, the most for any player. The glorious form of Djokovic and his unsatiated hunger for titles put Nadal’s unique record at risk in the coming seasons.
Djokovic was seen content with the title at Adelaide International. “I couldn’t ask for a better preparation and lead-up to Australian Open,” Djokovic expressed in the post-match conversation.
Where does Novak Djokovic stand among the greats?
21-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic could not have hoped for a better start to the season. Coming out of an injury scare in the semifinal against Daniil Medvedev and clinching the title gives a stern warning to his opponents for the things to come. With the title at Adelaide, the 35-year-old has further cemented his place among the greats.
In the record of at least one title in consecutive seasons his long-time rival Rafael Nadal tops the list with 19 seasons on the trot with at least one Tour title. The list also includes some of the former stars of the game. American former World No. 1 Andre Agassi is also tied with Federer and Djokovic with 18 consecutive seasons with at least one title. Jimmy Connors, Ivan Lendl, Andy Murray, and John McEnroe come after Djokovic.
With the title at Adelaide, Djokovic has also matched Nadal’s record of 92 singles titles tally. Now Djokovic has set his eyes on the first Grand Slam of the season. Winning a record 10th title in the Australian Open will immortalize him among the greats of the game for the ages.
