Serbian tennis legend Novak Djokovic has won 24 Grand Slam titles. A usual tennis season for Djokovic begins with a Grand Slam title or any title early in the season. However, that has not been the case this season and it is troubling the 36-year-old.
After his shocking exit from the 2024 Indian Wells on the back of a defeat to World No. 123 Luca Nardi, Djokovic admitted that not starting the season with a title is something he is not used to. When the Serbian was asked what are the things he could have done differently to change the outcome of the result, Djokovic said everything.
The 24-time Grand Slam champion said that it feels a bit odd for him to not win a title yet. However, Djokovic understands that this is also a part of the sport and is confident about ending his title drought this season.
I could have done everything differently. As I said, very poor performance from my side and no titles this year, I mean that's not something I am used to. I was starting the season most of my career with a Grand Slam win, a Dubai win, or any other tournament. But it's fine, it's part of the sport. You have to accept it, you win some, you lose some.Novak Djokovic said at the post-match press conference.
Novak Djokovic’s troubles this season so far
Novak Djokovic, as he mentioned, is not used to going trophyless in back-to-back tournaments. Although the Serbian has played only three tournaments so far, Djokovic is expected to win at least one title. However, the Serbian has not been able to live up to the expectations.
Djokovic started his season with the 2024 United Cup and did a decent job for his team. However, a defeat against Alex de Minaur was an early setback for the Serb. But Djokovic put that loss behind him and started his title defense in Melbourne.
The ten-time Australian Open champion was confident of defending his crown but it did not happen. Djokovic did not look in his best element right from the start. He had to sweat hard for wins. The Serbian played four-setters too early in the tournament.
While Djokovic somehow reached the semifinals, Jannik Sinner proved too hot to handle for him. Eventually, it was a defeat in four sets for Djokovic. Now, at 2024 Indian Wells, the Serb was expected to put on a show as he was returning after five long years. But nothing of that sort happened.
The 36-year-old is feeling the heat with youngsters coming hard at him. It is to be seen how Djokovic reacts to these gut-wrenching defeats early in the season.
