The heated Novak Djokovic controversy continues after his unexpected loss at the Indian Wells. The Serbian returned to California after five years to try to win his sixth title but faced a huge obstacle in the form of Luca Nardi.

Young Luca Nardi from Italy caused one of the biggest upsets in the history of tennis, as he took out Novak Djokovic from the tournament. The three sets of the match had all kinds of emotions from both players. However, it was Djokovic’s argument with the umpire that continues to make headlines.

The World No. 1 was arguably upset over the fact that Nardi hesitated for a moment before playing a shot. Djokovic held this with him till the end of the match, when he said a few words to the Italian as they shook hands.

The Serbian had once said that he would think about retiring once the young players started to beat him. He faced two back-to-back losses from young Italians, Jannik Sinner and Luca Nardi, respectively. Fans also targeted the World No. 1 for these continuous losses and the recent incident involving the umpire.

Sharing a wide spectrum of reactions online, here’s what fans have to say:

With no Australian Open title to start, Djokovic did not play in the Middle East and directly faced a second-round exit in California. Djokovic also admitted to playing sub-par tennis in the match and vowed to return stronger and win a tournament.

This has been a negative phase for the 36-year-old, who is desperate for a title win. Despite being one of the few players from the Big Four to not have announced any retirement plans, Djokovic’s recent losses allow fans to place him next to Murray and Nadal.
