Novak Djokovic set to miss the US Open after CDC reinstates vaccination mandate in updated guidelines

After days of uncertainty and speculation, it is now confirmed that Novak Djokovic will not be allowed to play in the US Open. The CDC updated its travel guidelines for foreign nationals but didn’t exclude the vaccine mandate, i.e. vaccination is still mandatory to enter the USA, and Djokovic, being unvaccinated will not be allowed to enter the country.

Since the CDC decided to imply the same rules for both vaccinated and unvaccinated individuals, it was speculated that they may make amends in their ruling and let go of the mandatory vaccination clause. But they decided against it and hence Djokovic will miss the US Open.

“Non-U.S. citizen, non-U.S. immigrants: You must show proof of being fully vaccinated with the primary series of an accepted COVID-19 vaccine before you board your flight to the United States. Only limited exceptions apply,” the CDC read.

The 21-time grand slam champion had already made it clear that he won’t be getting vaccinated and is ready to suffer the consequences of his bold actions. Due to the very same reason, he missed the Australian Open earlier this year and didn’t compete in the Golden Swing either.
