It is all going down for World No. 1 Novak Djokovic at the 2024 Australian Open. Up against World No. 4 Jannik Sinner in the semi-finals, the Serb had to defend a match point to avoid a straight-set drubbing.

Sinner inflicted Djokovic’s worst defeat in over a decade at Melbourne Park when he won the first set 6-1. He did not allow the Serb to improve much as the Italian clinched the second set 6-2. To fans just tuning in, it was a massive shock to see the defending champ lose the first two sets.

The third set was eventually pushed to the tiebreaker after Djokovic came clutching to make it 5-5. The two then held serves to move into the 7-point tiebreaker. The Italian still managed to reach the match point, but Djokovic defended it well before winning the next two points to force the fourth set.

With tempers already running high, Djokovic was subjected to massive disturbances during the service. Annoyed by the constant heckling, the top seed eventually snapped, and the chair umpire had to bear the brunt of it for not being able to control the crowd.

You going to say something or are you just going to sit there and be quiet? Would you like a cup of tea?

Jannik Sinner wins the match nearly an hour after his first match point

Expectedly, Djokovic took a long break after the third set. He had an outfit change and took an extended break. Sinner was already standing at the baseline when Nole returned to the court with a few boos going the Serb’s way.

Sinner, however, did not let all this distract him and wrapped up the set within an hour, winning it 6-3. The Italian won the match 6-1, 6-2, 6-7(8), and 6-3 to reach his first-ever Grand Slam event final.

To defeat Djokovic at Melbourne Park and then make the finals is no small feat, and the Italian will surely relish it.
