Novak Djokovic set a number of records today as he defeated Taylor Fritz in the quarterfinals of the 2023 US Open. The Serb gave a phenomenal performance against Fritz, as he defeated the American 6-1, 6-4, 6-4 in straight sets without an iota of struggle. With this dominating victory, he now steps into the semifinals of the tournament, which means that he is just two wins away from the 24th Grand Slam of his career.
Taylor Fritz has a current ranking of World No. 9 which makes this Novak Djokovic’s 250th win over the Top 10 players in the world, which is a remarkable achievement. Moreover, Novak Djokovic has now qualified for the most Grand Slam semifinals in the history of the sport. Previously, the record was shared by him and Roger Federer (46), while Rafael Nadal stood third on the list with 38 Grand Slam semifinals and the Serb is now at the top of the list with 47 semifinals.
Taylor Fritz had been in impeccable form in the tournament before this match. In fact, he had not lost a single set and then he met Novak Djokovic. Against the Serb, he did not even come close to winning a single set which once again shows how good Novak Djokovic is.
Novak Djokovic has a comparatively easy road to the final
Now that he has defeated Taylor Fritz, Novak Djokovic is expected to get a relatively easy opponent in the semifinals. He will face the winner of the match between Ben Shelton and Frances Tiafoe. They are both great players and have proven their mettle lately but they do not stand a chance against World No. 2, to be fair.
However, out of these two, youngster Ben Shelton might be the more threatening rival for Novak Djokovic just because of the fact that he is very young and dynamic and the Serb will not know what to expect. The 20-year-old has impressed the masses with his stellar serves and composure in the 2023 US Open.
Novak Djokovic has been on a mission to win his 24th Grand Slam ever since the Wimbledon Open. He came very close to turning that into a reality back then but was unfortunately defeated by youngster Carlos Alcaraz in the final. He thus wants to take his ultimate revenge at the US Open by winning the title. As Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic are the top two seeds in the US Open, they can only meet in the final. The Serb already defeated the Spaniard a few days ago in the Cincinnati Open final in an epic clash.
