24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic took on World No.4 Jannik Sinner in the second match of the ongoing group stage round at the ATP Finals. During a break mid-match, the Serbian ace was seen swaying to the chants of the Italian crowd as they booed at the World No.1.

Djokovic, who recently claimed his eighth year-end World No. 1 trophy, squared off against the Italian ace in his latest match. Since he was playing in his home ground, Djokovic’s 22-year-old opponent enjoyed crowd support in Turin’s Pala Alpitour. Instead of letting his frustration rake up, the 36-year-old was, however, seen swinging to the crowd’s cheers against him as he sat on his bench during a break.

The crowd’s reaction in Turin to a match featuring Djokovic was similar to what the Parisian crowd had retorted to at the previously held Bercy Open. At the Paris Masters event as well, the crowd booed at the 36-year-old in his last few matches as Djokovic applauded the crowd and smiled at them. Instead of feeling down about it, Djokovic was charged up as he ousted his opponents one by one to claim his record-extending 7th title win at the event.

This time around, however, Djokovic suffered a crushing defeat at the hands of Sinner. The 22-year-old demolished Djokovic to claim a 7-5, 6-7, 7-6 victory in a thrilling three-setter. In a press conference later, Sinner thanked the crowds for their support as he handed Djokovic his sixth loss of the 2023 season.

Novak Djokovic ‘expected’ Jannik Sinner to win against him

In a press conference following his recent match, Djokovic revealed that he had expected the Italian player to claim the win in the duo’s recent clash. The Serb stated that the result was a given since Sinner was playing in his home country and is in good form.

I expected it. He's the only Italian here andhe’s playing in Italy. There’s a lot of hype and he's in great form, so it's normal that people wanted him to be the winner.

The Serbian ace, who recently claimed the trophy for his 8th year-ending #1 ranking, is now at peace. Following his win over Holger Rune, Djokovic had successfully achieved his goal for the 2023 season. He had disclosed to the media that any wins in the match were a ‘bonus’ for him.
