World No 5 Novak Djokovic looks ahead for the kickstart of the 2023 season. He will start his 2023 campaign with his participation at Adelaide International. After registering himself in the singles draw, he confirmed his participation in the doubles draw. Moreover, he will also partner with his good friend Vasek Pospisil for the doubles match.
The Serb faced setbacks in Australia in 2022 due to his unvaccinated status. He was deported a few hours before his match followed by a three-year visa ban. The change in immigration rules for a person to enter the country resulted in the removal of his visa ban. As a result, he has been granted permission to play in the upcoming season at Down Under.
Djokovic played against Pospisil in the quarter-finals of the Tel Aviv Open this year and defeated the 32-year-old in straight sets. World No 5 played against World No 100 twice in the doubles in 2010 and 2015. But, this will be the first time both players will be playing together. The Adelaide International will take place from 1-8 January 2023 ahead of the 2023 Australian Open. Andrey Rublev-Karen Khachanov and Jack Draper-Jannik Sinner join the doubles draw along with Djokovic-Pospisil.
The former World No 1 has only won one doubles title whereas the Canadian has won seven doubles titles. The former doubles World No 4 is a part of Canada’s winning team in the 2022 Davis Cup. For the uninitiated, Vasek Pospisil is the co-founder of PTPA (Professional Tennis Players Association) with Djokovic.
Novak Djokovic cheered for Vasek Pospisil in the finals of the Davis Cup
The Wimbledon winner’s presence at the 2022 Davis Cup finals was quite a surprise to everyone. He was present with his family in the Martin Carpena Arena in Malaga to extend his support to the Canadian player. The Serb was overjoyed to witness Canada win their first-ever in the tournament’s history.
The doubles player was ecstatic to see Djokovic supporting him and extended his gratitude for his presence. He revealed that the 9-time Australian Open champion personally congratulated him which was something cool. Both Serbia and Canada fail to make the cut in the 18-teams international event for the 2023 United Cup. Due to this, Novak Djokovic and Vasek Pospisil will miss the mixed-gender event.
Djokovic and Pospisil serve as co-presidents for the first two years as the association includes both male and female players inside the top 500 singles and top 200 doubles rankings. The PTPA consists of nine members who are elected annually to form the board of trustees. It was formally founded as a non-profit organization in Canada in 2021. However, the idea of creating started way back in 2019.
