The men’s singles final of Wimbledon 2022 was one of the most unusual grand slam finals with two-time defending champion Novak Djokovic coming face to face with the unlikeliest of opponents, the unseeded Aussie maverick, Nick Kyrgios. Kyrgios had a 2-0 score against Djokovic coming into the final. The match pretty much lived up to the hype as Kyrgios came out all guns blazing, serving absolute rockets. He broke Djokovic who seemed rattled to take the first set 6-4.

Kyrgios’s serve was the only good thing going for him the entire match and that’s the reason he held off Djokovic for as long as he did. Djokovic’s quality of returns became better and better as he broke Kyrgios to take the second set 6-3. Kyrgios showed some signs of frustration in the second set, but as the third set began, he was unable to cope with the pressure of the big occasion. He lost the third set 6-4 and started unloading on his box much more frequently after his every error and every game loss. The fourth set was a bit better for Kyrgios who took the set into a tiebreak, but Djokovic ultimately prevailed winning the tiebreak and the title with a scoreline of 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 7-6(7-3).

It was a golden opportunity for Kyrgios to win his first Grand Slam title as his draw was a lot easier than it would be generally due to the absence of Russians, Matteo Berrettini, and Marin Cilic from his draw. He also received a walk over to the final and was fresh for a battle against Djokovic. But Kyrgios’s usual demons came back to haunt him and he lost his concentration, instead of finding solutions he was more focussed on venting out his frustration. But Djokovic was calm and composed as he found the solution to the Kyrgios problem and successfully defended his Wimbledon title for a third time in a row at SW19.

Djokovic’s victory at Wimbledon 2022 earned him his seventh Wimbledon title and he equaled the record of William Renshaw and Pete Sampras at SW19. This title also gave him his 21st Grand Slam as he pulled ahead of Roger Federer in the slam count and is only one behind Rafael Nadal‘s record of 22.
