There was an event organized by the management of the Cincinnati Open where they asked players to speak and share their views on past moments by showing them a photograph. World No. 2 and the winner of the competition, Novak Djokovic, was presented with a special picture along with his double partner, which took him far down memory lane.

The doubles partner was none other than four-time Grand Slam title winner Andy Murray. Djokovic talked about what a great duo they formed back then at the 2006 Australian Open. He also held his partnership with Murray as the most memorable one for him, as it was the only time that he paired up with Murray on the grandest stage of tennis.

He said, “Oh the famous doubles partner in the Australian Open Andy Murray, and myself. It is the only doubles we played with each other actually in professional tennis. So it was nice. Hopefully, we’ll get a chance to play again. Andy and I go back very long time.

Continuing his train of thoughts, he further added, “We were I think 11 or 12 years old when we played each other for the first time and it’s only a week difference between us age wise so yeah we kind of went on the same trajectory to professional tennis pretty much parallel with each other.”

One of the greatest rivalries in the sport, the Djokovic-Murray rivalry, was an absolute classic to watch. The stars met each other a total of 36 times, with Djokovic currently ahead having won on 25 occasions and Murray having won on 11 occasions. They even faced off against each other in the finals a total of 19 times, having featured in the finals of every single Grand Slam against each other.

The rivalry mostly began when Djokovic beat Murray in the semis of the 2021 Australian Open by 6-3, 3-6, 6-7, 6-1, 7-5. Just a year after Murray beat Djokovic in the 2013 Wimbledon Championships final, clinching the title.

Their notable clashes involve the 2011 Italian Open semifinals, the 2012 US Open final, the 2012 Shanghai Masters final, the 2015 Roland Garros semifinals, and the 2017 Qatar Open final, which was also the last time until now that these two veterans of the sport met against one another.
