The 2023 US Open is just a few days away from its kick-off. The year’s last Grand Slam will have tennis players from across the globe taking one each other. Among many matchups, the most-awaited is Novak Djokovic vs Carlos Alcaraz. With Roger Federer retired and Rafael Nadal not playing, Alcaraz has posed a tough challenge to the Serbian legend.

The young Spaniard has shown resilience and has proved that he is up for the grind. The two players have faced each other thrice this year and Djokovic leads the head-to-head having won the Cincinnati Masters final. However, Alex Corretja believes that defeat has only helped Carlos Alcaraz as the 20-year-old can now level the scores at the 2023 US Open.

The top two seeds are expected to face each other in the final and if that happens, Alcaraz has an edge, believes Corretja. He has claimed that the defeat in Cincinnati would not have bothered Alcaraz much as he only got to know how to be up against Djokovic. The former Spanish player then backed his countryman to take down Djokovic at the Flushing Meadows.

“I don’t think it should affect him because for him it’s a perfect final. It’s a perfect lesson moment, he learned from RG [Roland Garros] semi-final and then he did unbelievably at Wimbledon. Now, this is another final with where he knows how to be there with Novak,” said Corretja to Eurosport. “So, I don’t think he should go thinking any bad feelings, especially [given] he’s going into the tournament where he won last year. He already won another major, which may help him to understand that he can do it again.”

Alex Corretja then talked about how these two players going up against each other is a great spectacle for the audience. Corretja said that every time Djokovic and Alcaraz come against each other, they get to know their opponent better. The Spanish also believes that both have to be at their absolute best, or else it becomes trickier as being at even 99 percent is not enough.

“They know that is going to be a big battle all the time. They know it’s going to be very important to take the chances they’ve got because if not, maybe in the future, they won’t have those chances…And it always is going to be tough if one of them doesn’t play 100 percent they will fail because if they play 99 percent, it’s not going to be enough.”
