A pressure situation can get the better of anyone, especially if you are doing your work and people expect a lot from you. Pressure boils you up and then you stop using your brain and start making errors. There is a reason why staying calm is a rare trait.
Something similar happened with tennis ace Novak Djokovic. In his Quarterfinal match against Holger Rune, the Serb was seen losing his cool on numerous occasions. Either with the umpire or with his own box.
Djokovic was a set down as he lost the opener 6-2. The pressure was on as he had to win both the remaining sets to get to the semi-final. Rune maintained his level of tennis in the second set and Djokovic was seen making errors once again. The new rule of coaching being allowed was an issue for the Serb. Players would generally love being helped by those sitting outside. However, it seemed Djokovic wasn’t getting any clear instructions, and that irritated him big time.
As per sportal.rs, an animated conversation took place between him and his team when he was 5-4 up in the second set. “Coaching like this, coaching like this… Like this! Everyone!”, shouted Djokovic. “Confusion… All the time, everyone is in confusion!” he continued showing a zero to his box. However, the coaching staff wasn’t going to take a lot from the Serb. At one point coach Goran Invanisevic got annoyed and gave it back to Djokovic. “What kind of a b**ch are you? Play, play, play, get away from the ball” said the Croatian. The animated conversation didn’t help anyone. Djokovic may have won the second set but lost the match eventually 6-2 4-6 6-2.
What’s next for Novak Djokovic?
The Italian Open was Djokovic’s final warm-up event before the Roland Garros. He won’t take part in any other event before Paris. Djokovic would want to correct the errors as this is a rare season where he hasn’t reached a semi-final in any clay event. However, the good news for the Djokovic camp would be that King of Clay Rafael Nadal has withdrawn. Also Carlos Alcaraz faced a shocker in Rome.
Having one of his opponents at bay and the other coming through a stutter Djokovic would feel confident of having a deep run. He has won the event twice previously. In 2016 he beat Andy Murray to complete a Career Slam. In 2021 he won the event by beating Stefanos Tsitsipas after being 2 sets down against the Greek. Djokovic would draw inspiration from these performances as he would love to be the first Male player to win 23 Grand Slams.
